Digital ID in Hungary: Ügyfélkapu+, DÁP and the EU wallet
How to prove who you are online in Hungary: the DÁP app, Ügyfélkapu+, the eID card and who can register, plus where the EU wallet stands in October 2026.
CountriesPublished
In Hungary you identify yourself online with the DÁP app (Digitális Állampolgár, Digital Citizen), which replaced the old Ügyfélkapu login for government services. DÁP also acts as a digital document store and is described as a domestic forerunner of the EU wallet. This page explains the setup as of October 2026.

The national system
The old Ügyfélkapu login ceased to work on 16 January 2025. Since then, access to Hungarian e-government runs through Ügyfélkapu+ and the DÁP app. Ügyfélkapu+ was planned as an interim solution until the end of 2025, after which DÁP should be the only route. The official reason for the change was that the original system no longer met EU security requirements. How the trust levels differ is explained in levels of assurance.
DÁP does more than log you in. Its wallet function holds a digital identity certificate, lets you prove only an age threshold such as 18 or 65, share authentic data with a service, and sign documents electronically. Further data sets such as income, social security or vehicle information have been added. Hungarian trade media report dozens of organisations connected and over a million identity certificates issued; treat such numbers as indicative.
How to get it and use it
You must be at least 14 and have a Hungarian mobile number, a recent smartphone and a valid Hungarian document. Registration is online if you hold an eID card issued after 23 June 2021, because the app reads its chip, or in person at a government office if you do not. After registration you approve logins in the app, request certificates and share data with participating services.
The EU wallet in Hungary (October 2026)
Hungarian specialist media describe DÁP’s digital document store as a domestic forerunner of the EU wallet that follows the same logic as the eIDAS 2.0 rules. Independent trackers in September 2026 list the DÁP app and its digital wallet as an existing national app with a clearer implementation path, but not yet live as a certified EUDI wallet. The EU rules ask every member state for a certified wallet by the end of 2026; our guide to the EU Digital Identity Wallet explains the target picture.
Use abroad and by foreigners
For foreigners, eligibility is the main hurdle: DÁP is open to people with or entitled to a Hungarian address card, such as EU citizens registered in Hungary, but many third-country nationals cannot register. For use in other member states, what counts is notification under eIDAS and the connection of the target service; see using your national eID in another EU country. Hungary’s neighbours differ: Austria uses ID Austria, and Slovakia and Romania have their own eID cards and apps.
What to do now
If you live in Hungary and hold a suitable address card, do not postpone registering for DÁP, since under the original plans the app is the only remaining route to government services. Check whether your eID card was issued after 23 June 2021, in which case you can register online; otherwise plan an appointment at a government office. If you are a third-country national who cannot register, ask the competent office about alternatives and follow the official guidance.
Privacy and security
DÁP is designed so that you decide which data you share, and the age proof reveals only the threshold, not the birth date. Protect the phone with a screen lock, keep the app updated, and only approve login requests you started yourself. Phishing messages imitating government portals are a general risk: sign in only through the official app or portal.

Frequently asked questions
What happened to the old Ügyfélkapu login?
The original Ügyfélkapu stopped working on 16 January 2025 because it no longer met EU security requirements. Users had to move to Ügyfélkapu+ or to the DÁP app, and the plan was for DÁP to become the only option after the end of 2025. Check the official pages for the current rules.
Who can register for DÁP?
People with or eligible for a Hungarian address card, such as citizens, permanent residents, EU citizens registered in Hungary and recognised refugees. You need to be at least 14 and have a Hungarian mobile number. Many third-country nationals cannot currently register.
How do I register?
Online, if you hold an eID card issued after 23 June 2021; otherwise in person at a government office. The app needs a reasonably recent iOS or Android version.
Is the Hungarian EU wallet available?
Not as a certified EUDI wallet in October 2026. The DÁP app and its digital document store are live and are described as the national basis for it, but the formal certification path is still under way.
