Digital ID in Greece: Gov.gr Wallet and the EU wallet
How to prove who you are online in Greece: Taxisnet credentials, the Gov.gr Wallet app and new chip ID cards, plus where the EU wallet stands in October 2026.
CountriesPublished
In Greece you log in to government services on gov.gr with Taxisnet credentials issued by the tax authority, and you carry digital versions of your ID card and driving licence in the Gov.gr Wallet app. The EU wallet is meant to grow out of that app. This page explains how this works as of October 2026.

The national system
Greek e-government revolves around gov.gr, a single portal for hundreds of services. The long-standing key is the Taxisnet account: username and password credentials issued by the tax authority and used by individuals and businesses. Taxisnet therefore acts as the de facto national login, even though it began as a tax tool.
The Gov.gr Wallet adds a state-issued app on top. It stores digital copies of documents such as the ID card, driving licence, disability card or unemployment agency card, which you can show on your phone to officials or in some situations to private parties. Within Greece these digital documents are legally equivalent to the paper ones. How the trust levels of such tools are classified is explained in levels of assurance.
How to get it and use it
Sign in to the wallet with Taxisnet credentials or through online banking, then add your documents. The app is free and available for iOS and Android. You need Taxisnet credentials first, which you can request online or at a tax office; tax registration is a prerequisite, so newcomers should plan for a delay. Check the official gov.gr pages for the current enrolment steps.
For everyday use, the wallet is helpful when an authority or a police officer asks for your ID or driving licence, and gov.gr services let you share documents digitally instead of submitting paper copies.
The EU wallet in Greece (October 2026)
Greece has chosen to build its EU Digital Identity Wallet on top of the existing Gov.gr Wallet, so that citizens see one app rather than two. The wallet is in production today, and the EU-conformant version is described in public trackers as an upgrade under way. Independent overviews in September 2026 listed Greece as an existing national app confirmed for upgrade, not as a certified EUDI wallet. The EU rules ask every member state to provide a certified wallet by the end of 2026; our guide to the EU Digital Identity Wallet explains what that will mean in practice.
Use abroad and by foreigners
The digital ID in the Gov.gr Wallet is not a travel document, so abroad you still carry the card or passport. For online services in other member states, what matters is notification under eIDAS and the connection of the target service; see using your national eID in another EU country. Greece and Cyprus have linked their wallets so that citizens of either country can present digital documents in the other, according to trade press. Neighbouring Cyprus, Bulgaria and Italy have different models.
For foreign residents, the practical question is whether they can obtain Taxisnet credentials, which depends on tax registration.
What to do now
If you are tax-registered in Greece, keep your Taxisnet credentials safe and check from time to time that they work, because they are the key to gov.gr and to the wallet. Download the Gov.gr Wallet only from the official store and add your ID card and driving licence once you have access. Keep carrying physical documents when you travel. And watch for the point at which the wallet is certified as an EU-conformant version, because sign-in and functions may change then.
Privacy and security
The wallet keeps documents under your control on the phone and is intended for showing them when you decide to. Protect the device with a screen lock, install the app only from the official store, and be wary of emails or messages that imitate gov.gr or the tax authority and ask for your Taxisnet password. The Greek authorities do not need your password by email.

Frequently asked questions
What do I need to use the Gov.gr Wallet?
Taxisnet credentials or an online banking login to sign in, plus a smartphone with the app from the official store. You then add digital documents such as your ID card and driving licence.

According to the information available, the digital documents in the Gov.gr Wallet are valid within Greece but not as travel documents abroad. For border crossings you still need the physical card or a passport.
Is the Greek EU wallet available yet?
The Gov.gr Wallet is live, and the EU-conformant wallet is meant to be built on top of it. In October 2026 the upgrade to a certified EUDI wallet is still under way, so check the official pages for the current state.
Can foreigners living in Greece use gov.gr services?
Residents with Greek tax registration can usually obtain Taxisnet credentials. Whether a particular service accepts other eIDs depends on the service; some connect to the eIDAS network, others do not.
