Digital ID in Czechia: Bank iD, eObčanka and eDoklady

How to prove who you are online in Czechia with Bank iD, the eObčanka ID card, mojeID and the eDoklady app, and where the EU wallet stands in October 2026.

CountriesPublished

In Czechia you identify yourself online through Identita občana (Citizen Identity), choosing a login method such as Bank iD, the eObčanka ID card, the Mobile eGovernment Key or mojeID. The eDoklady app adds a digital version of your ID for checks in person. The EU wallet is being prepared by the Digital and Information Agency (DIA).

The national system

Czech public services accept several login means through one gateway, Identita občana. The three groups you will meet most often are:

  • Bank iD: you log in with your bank’s credentials. According to provider information it has several million active users, and it can be used for public services, the data box and many private services. Providers describe it as notified under eIDAS at the substantial level, but the Commission overview we consulted did not list it, so check the current notification list.
  • eObčanka: the electronic function of the ID card, used with a PIN and a card reader or an NFC phone. The eID card scheme is notified at the high level.
  • Mobile eGovernment Key and mojeID: two further means in the notified scheme with assurance levels from low to high, see our guide to levels of assurance.

The eDoklady app started on 20 January 2024. It shows your electronic ID when someone checks it in person, works offline and can be deactivated through the Citizen Portal if the phone is lost. You need an existing Citizen Identity to activate it.

How to get and use it

  1. If you have an account with a participating Czech bank, check the online banking settings for Bank iD. Activation is usually a few clicks.
  2. For the eObčanka, make sure the electronic function was activated when you received the card, and set up your PIN. Otherwise ask the issuing office.
  3. Visit the Citizen Portal to see your identity and available means, and set up eDoklady if you want the app.
  4. When a service offers “Log in with Identita občana” or Bank iD, choose your method and confirm the request.

The EU wallet in Czechia (October 2026)

The DIA runs the national EU wallet programme. An independent tracker listed it in July 2026 as an announced project without a public sandbox, with testing limited to a closed pilot. Analysts at one provider noted in early 2026 that Czechia had moved from a laggard position to the middle of the field. The eDoklady app is described by the government as an intermediate step that will be compatible with the EU wallet. For the legal deadline and wallet content, see our EU wallet guide.

Use abroad and for foreigners

The eID card scheme and the Mobile eGovernment Key scheme are notified, so other member states should accept them where services are connected to the eIDAS network. Test before you rely on it, and see using your national eID in another EU country. If you want to know how bank-based IDs like Bank iD compare with state eIDs, read about digital identity for banking.

Foreigners with residence in Czechia and a Czech bank account may be able to use Bank iD, and local reports said that a technical gap blocking foreign clients had been fixed. Ask your bank for its current policy. Neighbouring countries run their own systems: Slovakia, Austria with ID Austria, and Germany.

Privacy and security in brief

Because Bank iD reuses your banking login, treat every request with the same care as a payment: read which service asks for data and which data it requests. Never share PINs or codes, and report a lost phone or card promptly so that the identity can be deactivated. Official information on the app and registration is published at edoklady.gov.cz and the Citizen Identity site identita.gov.cz.

Quick checklist

  • Activate Bank iD in your online banking if it is offered.
  • Check that your eObčanka has its electronic function and a PIN.
  • Set up eDoklady for in-person checks.
  • Keep using the existing logins until the DIA announces a public wallet.
