About openideurope.eu
A small independent editorial team writing about digital identity and login security in Europe. Here is how the site is made, how it earns money, and what to do when we are wrong.
What we publish
Reference material on the EU Digital Identity Wallet and eIDAS 2.0, on the national eID systems of more than thirty European countries, on passkeys, two-factor authentication and account recovery, on the open standards underneath all of it, and comparisons of password managers, security keys and authenticator apps. Everything appears in English and German.
We are not OpenID Europe
From 2007 this address belonged to the OpenID Europe Foundation, a volunteer community that promoted the OpenID standard in Europe. That community is long inactive. We are not that organisation, we are not its successor, and we have no connection to theOpenID Foundation, which maintains the OpenID standards today. "OpenID" is a trademark of the OpenID Foundation.
We kept the old addresses that are still linked from elsewhere on the web and put a factual explanation behind each of them. The full account is inWhat happened to openideurope.eu, and the story of the community itself is told in our history section.
How we work
- Sources first. Regulations, implementing acts, official government pages, the specifications themselves and providers' own documentation and audit reports. Where we describe practice rather than rules, we say so.
- Dated facts. The EU wallet is rolling out right now and prices change. Time sensitive statements carry the month they were checked.
- Reviews are editorial assessments. We compare products on documented criteria: encryption model, independent audits, passkey support, where data is stored, recovery, export and price. We do not publish invented lab measurements or star ratings.
- Corrections. Substantiated errors get fixed. Significant changes are noted on the page.
How the site is funded
openideurope.eu is a commercial publication. It is funded by advertising and by partner links to some of the providers we review. If you buy something after following a partner link, we may receive a commission; the price is the same for you either way. Partner links are marked.
No provider pays for a mention, a position or a verdict, and no provider sees an article before it is published. Where a free or open-source tool is the better choice, we say so, even though it earns us nothing.
Who writes this
The site is written and edited by a small team rather than by named individual authors, and we do not attach personal bylines or invented credentials to the pages. Editorial responsibility sits with the operator named in the imprint.
